The National Cultural Commission is content with the preparedness and availability of a traditional dance group from the Central province to participate at the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture in Hawai’i, USA.
The group from Veifa’a village in the Mekeo area of Kairuku District is one of the four cultural groups invited by the National Cultural Commission to partake in the Pacific Festival (PACFEST) from the 6th – 16th of June, 2024.
The Mekeos will be representing Southern region. The other three traditional dance groups include dancers from Siassi in the Morobe province, representing Momase, a Kavieng group, representing New Guinea Islands region, and a group from Simbu representing the Highlands region.
National Cultural Commission boss, Steven Kilanda, expressed satisfaction after receiving a report from his cultural officers who travelled last week to Veifa’a village to physically confirm the preparedness and availability of the Veifa’a dance group.
He said he is also pleased to note that Central Governor, Rufina Peter, is fully backing the Veifa’a dancers, ensuring their participation on behalf of the province, the region and the country.
National Cultural Commission is the lead government agency that deals with all arts and cultural affairs in the country, and is currently organising to take a PNG contingent of arts and cultural ambassadors to Hawaii to participate in the world’s largest celebration of indigenous Pacific Islanders.
The festival is a dynamic showcase of arts and culture launched in 1972 by the South Pacific Commission (now Pacific Community – SPC) to prevent the erosion of traditional practices through ongoing cultural exchanges.
