A US based world-renowned historian and Director of Emeritus of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History Mr. Brent Glass was in Port Moresby on a U.S Department of State sponsored Speaker Series in partnership with the U.S Embassy in Papua New Guinea.
As part of his official engagement, Mr. Brent Glass visited the National Cultural Commission Head Office in Downtown, Port Moresby, on Tuesday, 17th September 2024.
He was accompanied by Officials from the U.S. Embassy, Claudia Borevina, Acting Public Affairs Officer, and Mathias Posu, Public Engagement Assistant.NCC Executive Director Steven Enomb Kilanda in his welcomed Dr. Brent Glass to National Cultural Commission and to Papua New Guinea.
Mr. Kilanda in his remark, stated that Papua New Guinea is a country that is culturally rich and diverse with over 800 plus languages and a thousand plus tribes spreading over 22 provinces.
“National Cultural Commission is the custodian of all cultural affairs in the country both tangible and intangible. Its a small agency manages the entire cultural affairs of this country.
We would like to take time to thank U.S Embassy to Papua New Guinea for engaging and bringing a very important person to Papua New Guinea and for nominating NCC as one of the cultural institutions for his visit,” said Mr. Kilanda.
Mr. Brent Glass thanked the National Cultural Commission for the warm welcome and kindness from the staff and senior officers. He pointed out that he is very interested and keen to work with NCC in cultural space. “What I am very interested in the work that you do is the protection of tangible and intangible heritage. Its so important,” he said.
“The purpose of my visit to PNG now is to be with leaders of Cultural Organisations and how we can foster collaboration and partnerships through exchange programs between Papua New Guinea and the United States of America.”
Brent D. Glass is the Director Emeritus of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. His is also a national leader in the preservation, interpretation, and promotion of history. Mr Glass is also a public historian who pioneered influential oral history and material culture studies, an author, and international Speaker on public memory and museum management.
