NCC RECOGNIZES KULKIE UNITED TOURISM CULTURAL CENTRE

The Western Highlands Kulkie United Tourism and Cultural Centre was recognized as a tourist hub by the National Cultural Commission.

The Tourism and Cultural Centre was launched in October 2023 in the Kim Village, Hagen Central, Western Highlands Province.

During the event, Mr. Bolo Noho, acting on behalf of the National Cultural Commission, presented a certificate of recognition to Mr. Moses Wai, who serves as the Cultural Center Manager at the Kulkie Tourism Cultural Centre. The certificate signifies the official recognition of the Tourism Cultural Centre under the commission, granting authorization for the center to function as a tourism hub.

Mr. Noho said, “On behalf of the National Cultural Commission Executive Director Steven Enomb Kilanda, it gives us great pleasure to present you the certificate and we would like to see this centre grow bigger and get more tourists both domestically and internationally to visit the area.”

“NCC is pleased to support this initiative and work in partnership with the community. Tourism based on culture is what NCC is promoting, and establishing this cultural center will help keep and promote the culture of the community and Western Highlands at large. The center is one of the core dimensions of keeping our culture alive and in doing so, people or visitors will come to see, know about the culture, and essentially explore the place,” he said.

Kulkie United Tourism and Cultural Centre manager Moses Wai said, more than 400 tourists have visited the center since its establishment in 2021.

“Modernization has changed the mindsets of the younger generations, and we are starting to lose some of our cultural practices, and it is dying out rapidly. Therefore, we are taking this as a challenge to bring awareness and make the young generations aware that our culture is unique and it gives us a sense of identity thus, it must be always practiced.” Said Mr. Wai

Mr. Wai said, “This cultural center will help the community and remind the young ones that through the culture you can be able to attract people from different backgrounds and places to your community.”

He said, “The cultural center will boost tourism in the province by bringing in tourists from different places.”

The Kulkie Tourism and Cultural Centre offers arrays of cultural activities such as traditional bamboo flute blowing, traditional fire making, stone sharpening, traditional mumu (pit oven), bride price, house cry (funeral), Hagen Weldo (Sing sing), bird watching, trekking, swimming, village night show, traditional cooking, and so many more cultural artifacts.
