NCC BOOSTS NFI WITH NEW EQUIPMENT

The National Cultural Commission (NCC) has delivered a significant boost to the National Film Institute (NFI) by presenting a Toyota Land Cruiser, a new camera, an archive machine, and additional materials on the 17th of March 2025 in Goroka, Eastern Highland. This support is aimed at enhancing NFI’s ability to document and preserve the cultural heritage of Papua New Guinea.

Presented at the handover ceremony were the Executive Director of NCC Mr. Steven Enomb Kilanda, Executive Manager of Corporate Services NCC, Ms. Jenny Jeffery, the Acting Director of the National Film Institute Ms. Precilla Jogere, the Director of NPAT Mr. John Doa, along with managers and staff members from the institution.

National Cultural Commission Executive Director Mr. Steven Enomb Kilanda highlighted the importance of the NFI in fulfilling its constitutional duty to recommend and record the country’s cultural assets.

He said, “The National Film Institute is responsible for recording and preserving the cultural stories of our nation. This is a vital role, and we are better equipped to do so with these new resources. The film industry is a huge sector that can generate millions of kinas for the country. If we use this opportunity wisely, we can meet the expectations and deliver results.”

“This equipment is just the beginning. We need to work together, implement programs, and produce content that showcases the unique and diverse cultural heritage of our nation,” said Kilanda

He also pointed to the Goroka Show as an example of a key cultural event that has not yet been documented. He challenged the NFI management, staff, and technical officers to fully utilize the new equipment to capture and preserve important cultural moments like the Goroka Show.

Mr. Kilanda also called for closer collaboration between the NFI and the National Performing Arts Troupe (NPAT). He urged both institutions to work together on various projects to create and promote content that will help preserve Papua New Guinea’s cultural heritage.

With the new equipment and a clear call to action, the National Film Institute is now in a stronger position to fulfill its mission of preserving and promoting Papua New Guinea’s cultural heritage. This donation marks a new chapter for the nation’s film industry, one that has the potential to generate both cultural pride and economic growth.

As NFI moves forward with its projects, the hope is that Papua New Guinea’s rich traditions and stories will continue to be shared with the world, ensuring that future generations can connect with their cultural roots. Through collaboration, innovation, and dedication, the NFI is poised to make a lasting impact on the preservation of the country’s heritage.
