MT. HAGEN CULTURAL SHOW MARKS 57 YEARS OF TRADITION WITH VIBRANT CELEBRATIONS AND CULTURAL PRESERVATION

The Mt. Hagen Cultural Show, one of Papua New Guinea’s oldest and most celebrated events, marked its 57th anniversary with a spectacular display of local culture and traditions. Held at Queens Park in Mt. Hagen City on August 17th and 18th, 2024, the event attracted hundreds of international tourists and brought together people from across the Western Highlands and the Highlands region.


Presented at the event were the Governor of Western Highlands Province Hon. Wia Rapa, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Hagen City, Hon Jim Benner, Hagen City Mayor Jacob Michaels, Mrs. Geno Reuben (Festival and Events Manager NCC) representing the Executive Director of National Cultural Commission Mr. Steven Enomb Kilanda, and other dignitaries.


This year’s show was a vivid celebration of Papua New Guinea’s rich cultural heritage, highlighting the city’s commitment to both preserving its traditions and maintaining a clean, welcoming environment. The two-day festival was officially opened by the Governor of Western Highlands Province, Hon. Wai Rapa, who expressed gratitude to the event’s organizers, tour guide companies, and sponsors.


Governor Wai Rapa noted, “Culture is very, very important. Our country has been independent for 48 years, and much of our culture is at risk of fading away. As the government responsible for the province, we are dedicated to promoting and preserving our culture. Western Highlands is rich in culture, resources, and agriculture, and it is everyone’s responsibility to keep our traditions alive and share them with the world.”


He also encouraged the people of Western Highlands to take ownership of their cultural heritage and to ensure that the town remains a safe and enjoyable destination for future events.


Mrs. Geno Reuben, Festival and Events Manager at the National Cultural Commission (NCC), praised the committee and the people of Western Highlands for their dedication to the show. She highlighted the authenticity of the traditional attire and performances presented at the event.


She said, “We aim to promote the true essence of Papua New Guinea’s culture, not just through traditional dress but also through the languages spoken, the songs sung, and the instruments used,” Reuben said. She also urged the Western Highlands Provincial Government to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NCC to enhance cultural activities in the province.”


The Mt. Hagen Cultural Show continues to be a significant occasion for celebrating and preserving Papua New Guinea’s cultural heritage, drawing participants and spectators from around the globe.
