The Ganige community in Simbu’s Kerowagi District recently hosted a vibrant three-day river festival from the 09th-12th January 2024.
The festival features traditional singsings, performances by local brass and bamboo bands, and the enchanting melodies of the Simbu flute (Kuakumba).
The Ganige Festival originates from the tradition of Kongum Bambun, which means “working together” in the Kuman language of Chimbu Province. This festival serves as a platform to honor the region’s rich cultural heritage and abundant natural resources. Its primary aim is to celebrate these aspects through this significant communal event.
It featured an array of cultural performances, exhibitions, brass bands, local string bands, river dancers, rich cultural heritage, traditional courtship rituals of Karim leg and Kukim Nus, and the kuakumba (sacred flutes, in the Kuman language).
Mr. Solomon Waine, representing the National Cultural Commission expressed gratitude during his visit to Kerowagi. He thanked the organizing committee and chairlady Dr. Jane Awi for registering the Ganige River Festival with the NCC. Waine also extended appreciation to Simbu Provincial Governor Hon. Noah Kool for his ongoing support of cultural events in the province.
Mr. Waine pledged a K5000 to the Ganige River Festival Committee on behalf of Mr. Kilanda and encouraged everyone in Kerowagi to continue safeguarding, promoting, and protecting their rich cultural heritage.
