Central Province launches its first music festival on Saturday 2nd December 2023. The National Cultural Commission and Central Music Association are the key holders behind this festival. Its progress and success will be a new chapter that will be documented for new generations.
Central Governor Ruffina Peter was at hand to formally launch the music festival at the Dynasty Restaurant at Vision City in Port Moresby that evening. Several top musicians from the province performed that night to mark their support for the event. They included Betty Toea, Taita Maraga, and Hitsy Golu.
Governor Peter, in her keynote address, applauded the National Cultural Commission for recognizing music from the Central Province. She said Central is known for producing some of the finest musicians.
“We will use this platform to promote our local music industry by working collaboratively with NCC in the years to come,” she said. National Cultural Commission Executive Director, Steven Enomb Kilanda, said music holds a special place in the cultural fabric of Papua New Guinea.
“It is a language that transcends boundaries, cultures, and traditions, connecting us all at our core. It isa language of unity, celebration, and storytelling that has been passed down through generations, preserving the narrative of our diverse heritage,” he said.
“Our vibrant nation is exceptionally blessed with a wealth of artistic talent that captures the spirit and essence of our people. From the captivating rhythms of traditional drumming to the melodious sounds of the pan flute, the voice of Papua New Guinea speaks through the power of music.
The Central Music Festival serves as a platform to showcase not just the traditional music that echoes through our mountains and valleys, but also the fusion of modern genres that speaks to the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of our youths,” said Mr.Kilanda.
He said this festival stands as a testament to the resilience and creative expression of our local artists. Their dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to their craft are the driving forces behind the success of this event. Through their mesmerizing performances, they bring to life the rich cultural identity of Papua New Guinea, offering a glimpse into the soul of our nation.
“The Central Music Festival catalyzes the growth of our tourism industry. Our breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality have long been an attraction for visitors from around the globe. By intertwining our music with the beauty of our surroundings, we create an immersive experience that will captivate the hearts and minds of those who choose to explore our paradise.
“I strongly believe in the transformative power of the arts. Music can foster understanding, forge connections, and drive economic growth in our nation. It is through festivals such as this that we can attract cultural tourists, who seek not just a destination but an experience that envelopes them in the magic of our land,” added Mr Kilanda.
